Here are some details about things we added to the frame
to improve safety or make certain things easier.
The radiator is normally supported at the bottom
by the lower baffle that attaches to the body. We fabricated
a bolt in support that attaches to the front framework. This
really seems to work well as we have done this on two Cobras
now.
A front bumper was added to help support the
front body mounts in the event of a slight bump. It also serves
as a place to mount a tow hook. This is very handy if the
car is stranded on the track for any reason. Tow truck drivers
need to act quickly, and having an obvious tow hook prevents
them from hooking to something that wouldn't take the stress
of a tow.
The rear bumper was added for reasons similar
to the front. The area of the frame behind the rear wheels
is designed to be a crush zone. This is good for a street
car, but I don't think it's needed on a race car. A light
to medium hit to the rear might normally require reconstruction
of the complete crush zone, but with the bumper this area
won't be damaged so easily. The fuel cell also mounts in this
area, and I'd like to protect that as much as possible.
This
site contains pics and info as a reference to those building FFR
Spec Racers, and anyone that simply has an interest.
The
site will not be updated further as I have sold this car in early
2003 before the start of the race season.
