Spec Racer Build - Brakes and Suspension
Front brakes are stock Mustang pieces. Different pads and braided lines are the primary changes up here. I also used the stock brack backing plates to fab up some plates that a cooling duct can attach to. This will help keep those stock 11" Mustang brakes cool. The key is to feed the air into the center of the disks. With such small disks this is hard to do, but I positioned the ducts as close to the center as possible. The hoses connect to the small openings on either side of the main opening in the front of the body.

The SSB rear disk brakes are basically just Thunderbird Turbo Coupe brakes (10" disk). The kit comes with hardlines for the calipers, but we have replaced those with flex lines. This makes it easier to remove the caliper and prevents any possible fatigue of the hard line over time. We have added brake backing plates and ducts to the rear brakes similar to the fronts (not pictured).
A brake bias adjuster has been installed in the rear brake line. The adjuster is mounted near the shifter for easy access while driving.
The master cylinder looks fairly easy to get to, but with the body on it can be a pain. Some experimenting with these may be needed to get the pedal effort and feel right. I think for most people a 1" bore should be about right.

The camber and caster is set by changing the position of the upper control arm mount. In the stock configuration, the mount is secured by two bolts that can slide laterally in the slots used for adjustment. After having problem with this at the first race, we added brackets that positively locate the upper arms. Shims are used for adjustment.
The rear suspension is standard Mustang 4-link with slightly revised geometry and coil-overs. One problem area is the travel limiting cables. Make sure that they do not go taut when the body rolls. If they do, the result is nasty one wheel spin and/or snap oversteer. Note- A three link and panhard bar setup have now been installed in place of the 4-link....a much needed improvement. In 2002 the three link will become standard.

This site contains pics and info as a reference to those building FFR Spec Racers, and anyone that simply has an interest.

The site will not be updated further as I have sold this car in early 2003 before the start of the race season.
